Eliminate Waste:
Use Sampling

Reviews, checks, and measurements are made for a variety of reasons. Can these reasons be satisfied without checking or testing everything? Many times, inspecting and testing everything results in waste of resources and time. Formal sampling procedures are available that can often provide as good or even better information than 100 percent checking.

Examples of Tests of this Change

In the past, the infection control group estimated the infection rate in the hospital by following up on every positive culture to see if it was an infection. They used the concept of sampling to change the process, taking a sample of 20 positive cultures each day and then estimating the infection rate from the samples. They were able to reduce one laboratory technician from the reduction in the number of tests required and the data handled.
