Eliminate Waste:
Reduce Classifications to Remove Complexity

Classifications are often developed to differentiate elements of a system or to group items with common characteristics. But these classifications can lead to complexity in a system that increases costs or decreases quality. Reduce classifications when the complexity caused from the classifications is worse than the benefit gained.

Examples of Tests of this Change

Having a lot of appointment types actually increases total delay in the system because each appointment type creates its own differential delay and queue. For example, if a physician only takes physicals on Tuesday afternoons, a patient needing a physical may have to wait several weeks until a Tuesday afternoon slot is available. In addition, each appointment type creates its own inclusion and exclusion criteria (who gets in and who doesn't). The more criteria, the more time it takes to put people in the line.
