Health Professions Education

Restructuring clinical education to be consistent with the principles of the 21st century health system was a key recommendation of the Institute of Medicine Report, Crossing the Quality Chasm. IHI’s health professions education group is addressing this goal through various pathways. A Collaborative of 16 medical schools has been implementing schoolwide quality curricula. Schools of nursing have joined the Collaborative and schools of pharmacy and health administration will follow. A strategic partnership with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) helps ensure a continuum of learning during residency training. In collaboration with accrediting boards, IHI’s team will help health professionals develop the foundation for lifelong practice based learning and improvement.
