Percent of Patients on Antiretroviral (ARV) Therapy with Annual Lipid Screen
 |

 |

Definition
Patients may experience metabolic complications as a result of taking certain combinations of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs. These complications include lipid abnormalities, lipodystrophy, lactic acidosis, hyperglycemia, and decreased bone mineral density. A lipid panel is recommended for patients on ARV therapy at least annually, to monitor effects of treatment regimen. Formula: The number of patients on ARV therapy with at least one HIV primary care visit in the past 12 months who also had a lipid screen in the past 12 months, divided by the total number of patients on ARV therapy with at least one HIV primary care visit in the past year. Multiply by 100 to calculate percent. For further explanation of this indicator and/or criteria for exclusions, please view indicator definitions on the National HIVQUAL Project’s website.
Goal
Increase the total percentage of patients/clients on ARV therapy who have a documented annual lipid screen to more than 90 percent within one year.
Data Collection Plan
At the end of each month, conduct a clinical assessment of patients’ medical records to determine the percent of patients with a documented lipid screen within the past year.
Count the number of patients on ARV therapy with at least one HIV primary care visit in the past 12 months who had a documented annual lipid screen. Divide by the total number of patients on ARV therapy with at least one HIV primary care visit in the past 12 months. Multiply by 100 to calculate percent.
The National HIVQUAL Project’s Minimum Sample Table will help you determine the number of records in your sample. Research Randomizer can generate a random number series to help you select which records to review.
