Community:
Create a Consumer Advisory Board
  1. Define the purpose and mission of the consumer advisory board (CAB). A CAB is an advisory committee of consumers that meets on an ongoing basis. CAB members review services, provide recommendations, bring new issues to the attention of the health center or clinic, and address other tasks as necessary.
  2. Recruit members.
  3. Establish ground rules, including code of conduct, confidentiality, attendance, etc.
  4. Schedule meetings. Provide reminders.
  5. Maintain a feedback loop, including use of meeting minutes, action plans, and reports.
  6. Report back to CAB with tangible results of their input, making sure to provide follow-up on all CAB recommendations.
  7. Provide rewards and incentives for CAB (such as dinner, outings, and educational opportunities).

Tips
  • Ensure that the mission of the CAB is aligned with that of the organization.
  • Provide food and beverages at CAB meetings.
  • Enlist the medical director to attend CAB meetings.
  • Consider seeking aid from pharmaceutical companies to sponsor group education events (e.g., breakfasts, lunches).
  • Monitor patient satisfaction with primary care services.
  • Send reminders for meetings.
  • Have "buddies" fill in for each other, so if one can’t attend the meeting, the other will.
