Kevin Huang-Cruz, with Mutable Memory
Kevin Huang-Cruz has always been fascinated with glass. While earning his bachelor's degree in Architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, Kevin supported himself by working in a stained glass studio. Upon graduation, Kevin became a construction manager and urban planner and returned to Pratt in the mid-1990s to get his master of science degree in City and Regional Planning.
In the late 1990s, Kevin returned to the glass studio to explore his fascination with geometry, pattern, and color. At Brooklyn’s UrbanGlass studio, Kevin learned the art of glass blowing, hot casting, lampworking, fusing and slumping, neon, and coldworking. Upon completion of his training, Kevin put away his T-square and drafting paper for a blowpipe and a kiln.
Today, Kevin’s work builds upon his experience as an architect and urban planner. He uses the everyday building blocks of the world around him — bricks, tiles, fabric patterns, urban, and natural landscape forms — as inspiration. His hard work over the years to polish his skills to uniformity and precision enables him to create pieces that are unique and individual. Whether reminiscent of the architecture of modern skyscrapers or the intricate weave of 1950's Japanese silk textile, Kevin’s fused glass panels are luminous canvases that capture light and shadow, becoming stunning works which are an active part of their environment.
