The Surgical Admissions Case Demand Mapping Tool helps identify demand for beds in relation to scheduled elective surgical admissions (Monday through Friday). More beds available than admissions (i.e., any data point below the diagonal line) indicates excess supply of beds. Each unit in the hospital that receives surgical admissions plots a data point designating the number of beds available and the number of scheduled elective surgical admissions assigned to the unit at the time of the AM Bed Huddle.
The data point represents the actual capacity against demand on a daily basis. More admissions than beds available (i.e., any data point above the diagonal line) indicates excess demand for beds. Equal beds available and admissions (i.e., any data point on the diagonal line) indicates a balance of supply and demand. These data assist with the placement of patients for the short term and allow for better understanding of demand trends for elective surgical admissions.
Directions
To use the tool, have each unit plot a dot on the graph at intersecting points of the number of beds available and the number of scheduled elective surgical admissions assigned to their unit during the AM Bed Huddle. Note the date and day of week next to the dot to track daily activity.
Interpreting the Dots:
- A dot above the diagonal line represents more patients than beds available
- A dot below the diagonal line represents more beds than patients
- A dot on the diagonal line indicates equal beds available and admissions (a balance of supply and demand)
Each unit may decide on their ideal patient-to-bed ratio to best accommodate daily patient volumes.
