Aim
80 percent of the patients on the acute behavioral health unit will be discharged on or before the provisional transition date.

Determine Provisional length of stay per diagnosis:
- Historical length of stay data from August 2003 - January 2004, a six month period, compiled and compared
- Length of stay by psychiatric diagnosis reviewed
- Psychiatrists determined a “reasonable” provisional length of stay by psychiatric diagnosis.

Schizophrenia — 12 days

Schizoaffective disorder — 15 days

“Champion” needed to insure that the steps of the process are completed for each admission.

Increased communication, verbal & visual, can impact by reducing the length of stay.
