IHI's work in developing countries is focusing its energies on enhancing capacity for the rapid expansion of treatment for AIDS, taking South Africa as its starting point in applying thoroughly tested approaches to collaborative improvement, spread of innovation, and chronic disease management.

 

The content shared here results from our continued work with partners in South Africa to improve antiretroviral (ARV) rollout, and to assist with the formation of improvement collaboratives in several of the country's provinces.

How to Improve

This poster presents how, using heath systems improvement methods, the Department of Health in South Africa has been able to rapidly devolve antiretroviral (ARV) care from a District Hospital ARV site to surrounding primary heathcare clinics (PHCs).

This document highlights two years of work in South Africa to developed methods to increase access to excellent HIV/AIDS care in resource-constrained settings.

Use this calculator to estimate the number of adults who will need to be started on HAART each year in a particular District, and the number of newly infected infants infected each year in that district.

These three presentations focused on lessons from developing countries were given at the April 2008 International Forum on Quality and Safety in Health Care.
