Prior to testing and implementation of a Rapid Response Team, organizations will need to provide education and training for staff, particularly nursing staff and members of Rapid Response Teams. Training should include topics such as the benefits and myths of Rapid Response Teams; criteria and procedures for calling a Team; communication and teamwork skills; etc.
Use this checklist to ensure that all staff involved with Rapid Response Teams have received the appropriate education and necessary training.
Background
A Rapid Response Team — known by some as the Medical Emergency Team (MET) — is a team of clinicians who bring critical care expertise to the patient bedside (or wherever it is needed). The Rapid Response Team is not intended to take the place of immediate consultation with the physician if needed. After consultation with the Rapid Response Team, a call is placed to the appropriate physician. The intention is to help patients in the time window of clinical instability and not to replace physician involvement in that process.
