Intensive Care Unit Average Length of Stay (ICU ALOS)

Definition

This measure determines the average length of stay for patients admitted to the intensive care unit and is obtained by dividing the number of ICU patient days by the number of ICU discharges each month.

Goal

Reduce ICU ALOS by 50 percent in 12 months in the medical ICU population, or reduce by 3.5 days for ventilated patients, whichever is greater.

Data Collection Plan

Data for the ICU average length of stay measure can be gathered from the hospital information system or can be calculated on a monthly basis.
