Percentage of Patients Who Are Current Smokers


Definition

The number of diabetic patients in the registry who are current smokers, divided by the total number of diabetic patients in the registry. Multiply by 100 to get the percentage.


Goal

Each organization should determine the appropriate goal based upon local smoking rates.


Data Collection Plan

On the last workday of each month, search the registry for all patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus who are current smokers. Also, count the total number of patients with a diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.
