Organization of Health Care:
Assign Day-to-Day Leadership for Continued Clinical Improvement
  1. Have the senior leader provide time for a day-to-day team leader to manage the initiative.
  2. Have the senior leader identify an enthusiastic and respected clinician to champion the work and the team.
  3. Gain the partnership and trust of the Chief Executive Officer and the Medical Director so that they will formally delegate authority to the team to make change.
  4. Select the improvement team and establish a regular meeting time.
  5. Engage administrative and clinical staff in the asthma project, so that people at all levels are aware of the improvements.
  6. Regularly evaluate the team process. Consider past performance of staff members when choosing the team.
  7. Make maintaining the progress part of ongoing work.

Tips
  • Ask the Medical Director to advocate for providing sufficient time for the day-to-day leader’s work.
  • Choose a physician champion who is:
    • Committed to improve the system
    • Able to articulate needs of team without alienating others
    • Willing to be a team member
  • Have the team leader deal with day-to-day activity, so that the physician champion will not be overloaded.
  • Make support of and participation in the asthma effort part of the annual evaluation for all staff.
  • Use data on symptom-free days or emergency department visits to drive care. Keep tying efforts to the organization’s mission and goals.
