    1. Request in-kind services from local speciality groups (ophthalmology, endocrinology, dental, etc.).
    2. Involve the clinic pharmacy to increase participation in drug assistance programs.
    3. Develop form with pharmacist for each indigent program.  Make arrangements with local pharmacy.
    4. Identify community provider resources (e.g., specialists, dentists) for referral.
    5. Request funding from service organizations (Lions, etc.) for specific items or equipment or services.
    6. Complete grant requests from national organizations.
    7. Advocate for expanded Medicaid benefit packages.

Tips
  • When approaching organizations for help, quantify request clearly.
  • Make face-to-face contact for requests.  This generally works better than letters, except for formal grant requests.
  • Ask all pharmaceutical representatives who detail the office for unrestricted grants to support the effort.
  • Ask the senior leader to allow staff to present to potential funders as paid time.
  • Maintain a sample application from each patient using the indigent drug program to use for obtaining refills.
  • Tie refills in with planned visits (see Delivery System Design).
