  MaiKhanda in Malawi

Click here to learn more about MaiKhandaFounded in 2006, MaiKhanda (meaning mother and neonate in a local dialect, Chichewa) works to reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by 30 percent in Kasungu, Lilongwe, and Salima districts by 2012. IHI has partnered with The Health Foundation, Institute of Child Health at University College London, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, and Women and Children First to meet these goals. MaiKhanda works closely with communities to ensure that improvements are positive and sustainable.

About Malawi

 

Geography

Malawi is located in Southeast Africa and is landlocked by Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. MaiKhanda works in the Kasungu, Salima, and Lilongwe districts.

  • Life Expectancy: 49 (male), 51 (female)
  • Under 5 mortality rate: 120/1,000 live births
  • Doctor-to-patient ratio: 2/100,000
  • The maternal mortality rate in Malawi is 984 per 100,000 live births and there are about 5,400 maternal deaths per year
  • The HIV/AIDs prevalence rate is about 12%

 Project Fives Alive! in Ghana

Click here to learn more about Project Fives Alive!Project Fives Alive! works to assist Ghana in achieving Millennium Development Goal 4 — reducing mortality in children under five by sixty percent by 2015. The program is being implemented in four waves and is funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. IHI works in collaboration with the National Catholic Health Service to build capacity for continuous improvement across health systems and to spread the changes being tested in current programs to the rest of the country. The project was launched in July 2008.

About Ghana

 

Geography

Ghana is located in West Africa and is bordered by Burkina Faso, Cote D'Ivoire, Togo, and the Gulf of Guinea. Project Fives Alive! currently works in three districts across Northern Ghana — West Gonja district, Navrongo-Bolgatanga diocese, and Jirapa-Lambussie district — with plans to spread throughout the entire country by 2012.

IHI began it's work in South Africa in 2002 and today is working in several regions across the country to improve health care quality in both urban and rural settings. The programs cover a broad array of health topics and address gaps in care that exist across district boundaries.

South Africa is located on the southern most tip of the African continent and is bordered by Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean.

 

IHI is working in districts in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Northwest, Gauteng, and KwaZulu-Natal regions.

  • Population: 48,282,000
  • Life Expectancy: 50 (male), 53 (female)
  • Under 5 mortality rate: 69/1,000 live births
  • Doctor-to-patient ratio: 77/100,000
  • 5.54 million people (12% of overall population) living in South Africa were infected with HIV in 2005
  • About 55% of people suffering from HIV/AIDs are women
