James B. Conway, MS, Senior Vice President, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), was an IHI Senior Fellow from 2005-2006. From 1995-2005, he served as Executive Vice President and COO of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). Prior to joining DFCI, he had a 27-year career at Children's Hospital, Boston, in radiology administration, finance, and as assistant hospital director for patient care services. His areas of expertise include governance and executive leadership, patient safety, change management, and patient- and family-centered care. Mr. Conway serves on several boards, is an Officer for the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Medical Errors, and a Distinguished Advisor to the National Patient Safety Foundation. He is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee on Identifying and Preventing Medication Errors; the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Quality and Cost Council; the Clinical Issues Advisory Council of the Massachusetts Hospital Association; and a past member of The Joint Commission Sentinel Event Alert Advisory Group.

 

James E. (Jamie) Orlikoff is President of Orlikoff & Associates, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in health care governance and leadership, quality, strategy, organizational development, and risk management. He is the National Advisor on Governance and Leadership to the American Hospital Association and Health Forum, and Senior Consultant to the Center for Healthcare Governance. Mr. Orlikoff has been involved in quality and governance issues for over 25 years, consulting with hospitals in six countries and working with hospital and system governing boards to strengthen their overall effectiveness and oversight of quality and patient safety. Author of the book The Board's Role in Quality Care: A Practical Guide for Hospital Trustees, he has written 15 books and over 100 articles. Mr. Orlikoff has served on hospital, college, and civic boards. He is currently a member of the Virginia Mason Health System board and chair of its Governance Committee.

 

James L. Reinertsen, MD, President, The Reinertsen Group, is also Senior Fellow at IHI, leading its Executive Quality Academy, The Role of the Board in Safety and Quality, and Engaging Physicians programs, among other projects. Dr. Reinertsen has 15 years of experience as a CEO and 20 years as a practicing physician. His leadership work has focused on quality improvement, leadership development, and innovative market design. Among other roles, he has been CEO of Park Nicollet Health Services, CEO of CareGroup, Chairman of the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement, a member of the IOM Committees that produced To Err Is Human and Crossing the Quality Chasm, and a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

 

William C. Rupp, MD, currently works part-time with Luther Midelfort–Mayo Clinic and is a faculty member at IHI. He spent 20 years at Luther Midelfort, serving as President and CEO for 11 years. Previously he was President and CEO of Immanuel St. Joseph's, part of the Mayo Health System, for five years. Dr. Rupp has helped physician organizations, hospitals, and health systems develop shared organizational vision, strengthen leadership and governance, accelerate the pace of change, and improve patient safety. He was a member of IOM team that wrote the report, Keeping Patients Safe: Transforming the Work Environment of Nurses.
