In the April 2009 Chapter Progress Report, we asked the Chapters to identify their goals for the next academic year – check out their ambition! Use these goals to organize your Chapter – what do YOU want to accomplish this year – how much, by when? Collaborate with other Chapter Leaders whose goals align with yours!
Membership, Organization, & Support

Increase membership
- Identify student leaders from each school
- Build relationships with other student organizations on campus
- Create a Chapter website
- Collaborate with nearby schools
- Introduce students to online courses
- Obtain funding for our Chapter
- Develop a leadership succession plan
- Recruit faculty to join the Chapter
- Get 10% of the first year medical student to join the Chapter
- Start a Chapter blog
- Establish a newsletter or other means of regular communication
- Create map of quality improvement projects going on campus
- Explain Chapter to all faculty at the hospital
- Obtain recognition from campus as an official student organization
- Establish a training plan for Chapter members
- Obtain recognition for local hospital leaders for the university chapter (CNO, COO, etc)
Education
- Attend an IHI conference
- Engage local hospital in Chapter activities and get students involved in quality improvement projects
- Review a case study with our Chapter
- Visit the IHI Office
- Obtain IHI Open School certification of completion when available
- Recruit at least three Chapter members to complete courses
- Encourage students to present their quality improvement research projects
- Establish a firm presence in the undergraduate induction programme for the ethos of the IHI Open School and its development
- Identify opportunities to include quality improvement in courses in the university and/or hospital
- Revise leadership course on campus to incorporate quality improvement
Events & Activities
- Host regular meetings or events
- Host at least one guest speaker
- Host a regional event for students
- Identify a change we can make and participate in a community service project
- Host a monthly Chapter Call
- Host an event with another student organization on campus
- Host a quality of care forum to provide exposure for work being done at the our hospitals
- Organize a patient safety day to pilot the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist
- Complete our first quality improvement project at the student run family clinic
- Set up a Deans’ Symposium on patient safety and quality improvement to involve the entire community
- Start quarterly grand rounds on quality improvement and patient safety
