  Overview

CMS, the National Quality Forum, and others are now placing an increased emphasis on mortality reporting and improvement. Linked to health reform and consumer interest, there is a call for public reporting of hospital mortality rates within individual states, with Massachusetts setting a goal of January 1, 2010. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) can equip you with the tools you need to understand your hospital-specific mortality rate, how it compares with other hospitals, and what you can do about it.

Join us for Reducing Hospital Mortality, a new two-day seminar that highlights the key interventions and organizational changes made by hospitals that have reduced their Hospital Standardized Mortality Ratio (HSMR) 30-50% over the past five years.

 Who Should Attend
 What You'll Learn

This seminar is designed for both hospital leaders and front-line clinical managers, such as:

  • Chief Executive Officers
  • Chief Medical Officers
  • Chief Quality and/or Safety Officers
  • Chief Nursing Officers
  • Vice Presidents of Medical Affairs
  • Nursing Leaders
  • Quality Leaders
  • Respiratory Therapy Leaders

Each will learn about system-level improvements that lead to mortality reduction, and will leave with tools and plans for enhancing organizational focus on mortality reduction.  Group enrollment is highly recommended, and will result in better execution and heightened motivation after the program.

  • Learn why mortality reduction focused on system-wide changes and specific diagnoses can both be helpful
  • Understand the hospital standardized mortality ratio (HSMR) and how to use it as an effective measurement of adjusted mortality rates
  • Identify where the greatest opportunities for improvement exist in your hospital
  • Learn ways to reliably implement and sustain proven interventions that impact hospital mortality
  • Draft a plan for executing changes targeted at specific mortality reduction opportunities in your hospital

 Continued Support

After the program, participants are welcome to participate in conference calls with fellow participants and faculty. The calls will be strategically scheduled after the program, allowing time for participants to gain experience and apply what they've learned at their organizations.

The conference calls are a benefit for program participants, but are not mandatory. They provide an excellent opportunity to share experiences and to get additional support from faculty.
