Listen to the December 2007 informational call about the program featuring Allan Frankel, MD.
Teamwork doesn’t always come naturally to health care professionals. Our cultures too often emphasize autonomy and working within professional boundaries. But the new rules of health care focus on better cooperation and collaboration among and between clinicians. Staff in high-risk areas such as emergency departments, intensive care units, labor and delivery units, and operating rooms must work as high-functioning teams to deliver safe and effective care. Outpatient settings also require strong communication between multiple caregivers. In any health care setting, successful teams must demonstrate leadership skills, effective team communication, and a commitment to ongoing process improvement.
To address this need, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) has developed Delivering Safe and Optimal Care Through Effective Teamwork and Communication. This two-day seminar provides participants with strategies and tools for training teams and overseeing the implementation of effective team communication. Led by expert IHI faculty Allan Frankel, MD, Michael Leonard, MD, and J. Bryan Sexton, PhD, this seminar merges leadership skills, team communication, and process improvement together to create a framework that teams can use to manage their resources wisely and improve their overall performance.
Upon completion of this seminar, you will be able to:
- Implement practical strategies to create and maintain team communication
- Implement measures to sustain evidence-based teamwork and communication
- Utilize practical tools and resources that can be applied in your organization
- Describe best practices in the field, including tools, structures, and strategies
- Train others on how to implement teamwork and communication
