Kirk B. Jensen, MD, MBA, FACEP, Chief Medical Officer, BestPractices, Inc., is also a faculty member for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, currently chairing Learning and Innovation Communities on Operational and Clinical Improvement in the Emergency Department and Improving Flow in the Acute Care Setting. Dr. Jensen completed a residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Chicago and an MBA at the University of Tennessee. He is co-author of the 2008 ACHE award-winning book, Leadership for Smooth Patient Flow. Dr. Jensen is a nationally recognized expert on patient flow, patient safety and satisfaction, ED operations, and process improvement.
Deborah J. Kaczynski, Administrative Director of Ancillary Services and Capacity Management, UPMC Shadyside, oversees quality and operational improvement efforts. Her recent work has been mainly focused on patient flow initiatives and capacity management. She also oversees the UPMC Health System Patient Flow Community, a group of 12 system hospitals, in their effort to improve flow within their hospitals. Ms. Kaczynski is faculty for IHI's Learning and Innovation Community on Improving Flow Through Acute Care Settings.
Kevin Nolan, MA, Statistician and Consultant, Associates in Process Improvement and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, has focused on developing methods and helping organizations, both within and outside of health care, accelerate their rate of improvement. He has served on the faculty of several IHI Breakthrough Series Collaboratives, the Hospital Flow Innovation Community, and large system spread projects. He is co-author of the book The Improvement Guide.
Roger K. Resar, MD, Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, has contributed to the development and national spread of key safety and improvement strategies such as medication reconciliation, use of the Trigger Tool methodology to measure adverse events, the development of "bundle science," and the use of reliability concepts in health care. Dr. Resar serves as faculty for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, where he also participates on innovation teams to create change concepts, design testing in prototype sites, and teach these innovations.
Marilyn Rudolph, RN, BSN, MBA, Vice President, Performance Improvement, VHA Pennsylvania, Inc., supports VHA organizations in their efforts to improve quality and clinical and operational performance in a wide variety of health care initiatives. Prior to joining VHA, she was Director of the Outpatient Surgery and Endoscopy Departments at Sewickley Valley Hospital. She has over 20 years of experience as a registered nurse with a focus on ambulatory, emergency, critical care, and perioperative nursing. Ms. Rudolph has led hospital efforts to improve perioperative patient flow, increase on-time surgical case start times, reduce surgical case cancellation rates, and streamline multiple perioperative processes. She serves as faculty for the Institute of Healthcare Improvement Learning and Innovation Community on Improving Flow.
