Prior to Session One participants will:

 

Session 1: Overview on Creating Efficiencies and Reducing Expenses

Faculty:  Maureen Bisognano, John Toussaint
Date: Wednesday, June 17, 2009

  • Discuss briefly the business case, focusing on the principles (Kano)
  • Understand the Kano-2 approach
  • Have each panelist briefly describe their own efforts at waste reduction, given the economic climate
  • Overview of the IHI driver diagram
  • Q&A
  • Set-up for Action Period One

 

Action Period One (June 18 – June 24, 2009)

Participants will: Bring together members of their operations team, clinical quality improvement department, and financial team to complete the driver diagram template identifying opportunities for a waste reduction project.

 


Session 2: Creating a Waste Reduction Portfolio in Your Organization

Faculty: Maureen Bisognano, Chuck Neumann, Scott Hamlin, Fred Rykman, Randy Fuller 
Date: Thursday, June 25, 2009
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM Eastern Time

 

  • Describe efforts at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to link financial management with quality
  • Question and Answers
  • Setup for Action Period Two

Action Period 2 (June 26 – June 29, 2009)

Participants will: Meet with their cross-functional team a second time and create a waste reduction portfolio for their organization.  The team will also charter a project on waste reduction ensuring that a member of the financial team will monitor the associated financial savings.

 


Session 3: Leadership: Tools for Tracking Expense Reduction and Managing an Organization Focused on Creating Efficiency

Faculty: Tom Nolan, Jim Mateer, Sigma Aldrich  
Date: Tuesday, June 30, 2009
Time: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Eastern Time

 

  • Review 3 tools for identifying “dark green dollars” (i.e., actual savings on the bottom line)
  • Leadership changes needed in your organization
