The goals of IHI’s Fellowship Programs are to:
Fellows spend one year on site at IHI. Each fellow has a structured individualized learning and work plan, including intensive training in improvement skills, weekly seminars, attendance at IHI events, assignments in IHI innovation and improvement collaborative projects, and individually tailored projects under the direction of an IHI mentor.
Fellows participate in the Summer Program in Clinical Effectiveness at the Harvard School of Public Health, which offers intensive training in measurement, epidemiological and statistical principles necessary to weigh evidence and design sound improvement projects, quality improvement principles, and mentoring in the design of projects relevant to quality assessment and improvement. Fellowships offer stipends, cover travel and tuition, and support expenses associated with individual learning plans.
There are three different Fellowship Program opportunities at IHI:
The George W. Merck Fellowship Program supports fellows in the US (Application deadline for the 2009-2010 fellowship year: October 1, 2008. Early application is encouraged.)
Fellows complete individualized and group training within and external to the IHI, work side-by-side with IHI leaders on innovation teams and assignments in transformational change, and lead novel projects.
The Health Foundation's Quality Improvement Fellowship supports fellows from the UK(Application deadline for the 2008-2009 fellowship year has passed. A new deadline will be posted shortly.)
The Health Foundation’s Quality Improvement Fellowships aim to develop senior clinical leaders with the enthusiasm, experience, and skills to promote quality improvement. The fellowships provide an opportunity to make international comparisons and explore alternative models of health care. Academic learning is combined with the development of practical skills in three key areas:
