Donald Berwick, MD, MPP, FRCP, President Emeritus and Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement, is also former Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. A pediatrician by background, Dr. Berwick has served on the faculty of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health, and on the staffs of Boston's Children's Hospital Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Brigham and Women's Hospital. He has also served as Vice Chair of the US Preventive Services Task Force, the first "Independent Member" of the American Hospital Association Board of Trustees, and Chair of the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He served two terms on the Institute of Medicine's (IOM's) Governing Council, was a member of the IOM's Global Health Board, and served on President Clinton's Advisory Commission on Consumer Protection and Quality in the Healthcare Industry. Recognized as a leading authority on health care quality and improvement, Dr. Berwick has received numerous awards for his contributions. In 2005, he was appointed "Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire" by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his work with the British National Health Service. Dr. Berwick is the author or co-author of over 160 scientific articles and six books. He currently serves as Lecturer in the Department of Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School.
Jill Duncan, RN, MS, MPH,
Executive Director, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), provides strategic development and programming leadership for IHI’s Leadership Alliance, IHI’s Merck for Mother’s initiatives, and program development and facilitation for many of IHI's workforce development initiatives. Her previous IHI responsibilities include daily operations and strategic planning for the IHI Open School, leadership of IHI's Joint Replacement Learning Community, and program coordination and faculty guidance for IHI's Leading Quality Improvement: Essentials for Managers program. Ms. Duncan draws from her learning as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, quality leader, nurse educator, and front-line care provider.
Derek Feeley, DBA,
President and CEO, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), has executive-level responsibility for driving IHI’s strategy across five core focus areas: Improvement Capability; Person- and Family-Centered Care; Patient Safety; Quality, Cost, and Value; and Triple Aim for Populations. His role is international in scope, guiding work to deliver on IHI’s mission to improve health and health care around the world. Prior to joining IHI in 2013, Mr. Feeley was Director General for Health and Social Care, and Chief Executive of the National Health Service (NHS) in Scotland. In this role he was the principal adviser to Scottish Ministers on health and care issues and he provided direction to the work of NHS Boards in ensuring the delivery of high-quality health care. Mr. Feeley has a varied background in policy analysis gained during his thirty years in public service. From 2002 to 2004, he served as Principal Private Secretary to Scotland's First Minister, which then led to a new role developing a framework for service redesign in the NHS. A 2005-2006 Harkness/ Health Foundation Fellow in Health Care Policy, he spent one year in the United States working with Kaiser Permanente and the Veteran's Health Administration. Upon returning to the NHS, Mr. Feeley was appointed Director of Healthcare Policy and Strategy, with responsibility for advising the Scottish Government on all health care quality and patient safety issues, and he led work focused on health care information technology.
Mara Laderman, MSPH, is a Director with IHI’s Innovation Team. As content lead for IHI’s work in behavioral health, she directs research initiatives and develops programming focused on better meeting individuals’ behavioral health needs across the health care system. Ms. Laderman also leads innovation projects on population health improvement, including recent work on the opioid crisis, health equity, and clinical–community linkages. Prior to IHI, she managed a large psychiatric epidemiology study at the Center for Multicultural Mental Health Research. Ms. Laderman received a master of public health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and a bachelor of arts in psychology from Smith College.
Saranya Loehrer, MD, MPH, Head of Innovation, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), leads a team of curious and creative researchers responsible for exploring seemingly intractable impediments to health and health care improvement and developing actionable theories and tools that can be tested in collaboration with partners worldwide. In addition, she supports select efforts of the IHI Leadership Alliance, a group of 40+ leading US health care executives working courageously and collaboratively to deliver on the full promise of the Triple Aim. Prior to joining IHI, Dr. Loehrer worked for Physicians for Human Rights, leading global and domestic grassroots advocacy efforts to create more just and scientifically sound HIV/AIDS policies. She received her MD from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, where she was an Albert Schweitzer Fellow, and her MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health, where she was a Zuckerman Fellow.
Kedar Mate, MD
, is the Chief Innovation and Education Officer at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) and a research professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Mate’s scholarly work has focused on health system design, health care quality, strategies for achieving large-scale change, and approaches to improving value. He is the recipient of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship and has been recognized as an Aspen Institute Healthcare Innovator. Previously Dr. Mate worked at Partners In Health, served as a special assistant to the Director of the HIV/AIDS Department at the World Health Organization, and led IHI’s national program in South Africa. Dr. Mate has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and white papers. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in American History and from Harvard Medical School with a medical degree.
John W. Whittington, MD, is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and IHI's lead faculty for the Triple Aim: achieving the optimal balance of good health, positive patient experience of care, and low per capita cost for a population. Dr. Whittington has more than 30 years of experience in medicine, population health, and patient safety. He previously served as the Medical Director of Knowledge Management and Patient Safety Officer for the OSF Healthcare System. Prior to that position, he worked for many years as a family physician. Dr. Whittington has been involved as a senior faculty member on numerous IHI projects in safety, spread, inpatient mortality reduction, the Executive Quality Academy, and engaging physicians in a shared quality agenda, among other areas. He is part of a core IHI team that works on research and development.
