IHI's Innovation Team

Alex Anderson, Research Associate and Co-Chair for IHI’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, is focused on understanding how traditionally disparate actors can work together to improve health and health care through system design.

Marian Bihrle Johnson, MPH, is a Director of the IHI Innovation Team. She leads research and policy initiatives related to reducing readmissions, resident education, and care for Medicaid and dually eligible beneficiary populations

Tam Duong, MS, is a Research Associate & Project Manager focused on a range of programs related to population health and the Triple Aim. Tam develops program content, implementation strategies, and evaluation strategies. She also drives workplans, manages budgets, and builds relationships with partners and faculty.

Mara Laderman, MSPH, is a Director on IHI’s Innovation Team. Her recent work has focused on integrating behavioral health across the continuum of care and improving health equity.

Kedar Mate, MD, is the Chief Innovation and Education Officer at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and has overseen the developments of innovative new systems designs to implement high quality, low cost health care both in the US and in international settings. He is also an Internal Medicine physician and an Assistant 

Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School’s Division of Global Health Equity.

Jeff Rakover, MPP, is a Senior Research Associate focusing on innovative payment and delivery models for maternal and infant health, as well as the implications of payers and providers applying quality improvement methods to achieve the Triple Aim.

Marina Renton.JPGMarina Renton works as a Research Assistant on the IHI Innovation team, supporting the Better Care Playbook, among other projects. She spends the rest of her time as a Project Coordinator, primarily preparing for and hosting IHI Virtual Expeditions, action-oriented online training programs. Marina is a recent graduate of Brown University, where she majored in Public Health and English.


Patricia Rutherford, RN, MS, Vice President, is responsible for developing and testing innovations and new models of care in innovations in patient- and family-centered care; improving access to the right care, in the right place, at the right time; Transforming Care at the Bedside; optimizing care coordination and transitions in care; and clinical office practice redesign (in primary care and specialty practices).


John Whittington is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and IHI’s lead faculty for the Triple Aim and has been a senior faculty member on numerous IHI projects including in the areas of safety, spread, inpatient mortality reduction, the Executive Quality Academy and engaging physicians in a shared quality agenda, among others.
